The Ngorongoro Crater is, quite simply, one of the most extraordinary places on Earth. Departing Arusha before dawn, you'll reach the forested crater rim as morning mist lifts to reveal the vast floor 600 metres below. The descent road winds through montane forest before opening onto a patchwork of grassland, swamp, and soda lake.

Black rhinos graze in open grassland, lion prides lie in the shade of fever trees, elephants amble along the Lerai Forest edge, and thousands of flamingos rim the shores of Lake Magadi.
