Materuni Waterfalls & Coffee Plantation Walk

Experience Overview

Experience Overview

Materuni is a Chagga village on the green southern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, about 30 minutes above Moshi. This full-day excursion combines a waterfall hike, a hands-on coffee experience and village life — a relaxed and very human counterpoint to days on safari.

From cherry to cup

At a family coffee farm, your hosts show you how Arabica coffee is grown in the shade of banana plants on Kilimanjaro's volcanic soil. You then take part in every step of the traditional process: picking or sorting the beans, roasting them over a wood fire, grinding them by hand in a wooden mortar while the family sings, and finally brewing and tasting your own cup.

The Materuni Waterfall

A guided walk through banana groves and forest leads to the Materuni Waterfall, which drops some 80 metres into a pool surrounded by green cliffs. On clear days, Kibo's snow-capped summit appears above the village on the way. The day ends with a traditional Chagga lunch prepared by local women before your return to Moshi.

We were fortunate to be accompanied for 7 days by Jones, our French-speaking guide, on safari through Manyara, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, and Tarangire. Traveling as a family spanning three generations, we were all amazed by his exceptional knowledge of wildlife, perseverance, and infectious enthusiasm. Thanks to him, we were able to observe all the iconic animals in perfect conditions, often feeling as if we were alone in spectacular landscapes. A special thank you also to Georges, who accompanied us in another vehicle for the luggage and brought good humor and positivity every day. Thanks to Jones and Georges, this safari will remain a magical, authentic, and emotional experience. We highly recommend them to anyone dreaming of an unforgettable safari in Tanzania. Hakuna Matata!

Super.
