Kilimanjaro Day Hike — Shira Plateau Summit Walk

Experience Overview

Experience Overview

Not everyone has a week to climb to Uhuru Peak, but you can still walk on Kilimanjaro's high slopes in a day. This guided hike takes you onto the Shira Plateau, a vast high-altitude caldera on the western side of the mountain, where the air is thin, the views are huge and Kibo's glaciers feel close enough to touch.

Driving high, walking higher

A 4×4 takes you through Londorossi Gate and up the western slopes to the trailhead on the Shira Plateau at around 3,600 m, avoiding the long forest approach. From there, your KINAPA-licensed guide leads you across moorland of heather, giant groundsels and everlasting flowers to viewpoints at about 3,800 m, with Kibo, the Western Breach and the Shira Cathedral in front of you and, on clear days, Mount Meru floating above the clouds to the west.

Who it suits

The walk covers around 10 km on moderate terrain and suits reasonably fit walkers. You will feel the altitude, so your guide keeps a slow pace and watches for symptoms; it is not recommended for anyone with heart or lung conditions. Bring warm layers — it can be cold and windy on the plateau even on sunny days.

We were fortunate to be accompanied for 7 days by Jones, our French-speaking guide, on safari through Manyara, Ngorongoro, Serengeti, and Tarangire. Traveling as a family spanning three generations, we were all amazed by his exceptional knowledge of wildlife, perseverance, and infectious enthusiasm. Thanks to him, we were able to observe all the iconic animals in perfect conditions, often feeling as if we were alone in spectacular landscapes. A special thank you also to Georges, who accompanied us in another vehicle for the luggage and brought good humor and positivity every day. Thanks to Jones and Georges, this safari will remain a magical, authentic, and emotional experience. We highly recommend them to anyone dreaming of an unforgettable safari in Tanzania. Hakuna Matata!

Super.
