Tanzania

Tanzania is one of the finest safari destinations in Africa. Around a third of the country is protected as national parks, conservation areas and game reserves, home to the Serengeti and the Great Migration, the wildlife-filled Ngorongoro Crater, the elephant herds of Tarangire and the vast wilderness of Nyerere and Ruaha in the south.

It is also a land of superlatives beyond the parks. Mount Kilimanjaro, at 5,895 metres, is the highest mountain in Africa and can be climbed without technical experience, while the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba offer white-sand beaches, coral reefs and the historic Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The northern circuit — Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti — is the classic first safari, with good roads and lodges and outstanding wildlife all year. The southern and western parks reward travellers who want fewer vehicles and a wilder experience. The main dry season, from June to October, is ideal for game viewing, while the green season from November to May brings calving, migrant birds and lower prices.
